"text": "Gay uncles, sometimes known as guncles, are celebrated today on Gay Uncles Day. The idea for the day came from C.J. Hatter of Florida, who made a Facebook post on May 8, 2016, that said: \"I hereby proclaim the second Sunday in August to be Gay Uncles' Day! Hey, we deserve a holiday of our own!\" The holiday is largely celebrated online, and it isn't just for uncles. Gay uncles, aunts, and other LGBT+ relatives post photos of themselves with their nieces and nephews and other young relatives. Parents also post online, celebrating their LGBT+ siblings, and sharing their gratitude for the role they play in their children's lives.\nThe holiday gained traction when rugby player and Australian bobsleigh team member Simon Dunn made an Instagram post with his nephews where he asked if people wanted to celebrate the holiday. Dunn thought the day would allow gay family members who had been bachelors the comfort to come out of the closet. He told Instinct Magazine: \"My goal in promoting this day of celebration is to normalize the role of the gay uncle, cousin, brother…whatever, in the family and in society. The more visible we are and the more forthright we and our loved ones are of our very existence, the less uncomfortable society will be with us.\" Other celebrities quickly embraced the holiday, including Anderson Cooper, who posted a video of himself with his nephew.",
